This story really got to me. It’s about the need to spend time with the Bible, the treasure trove of heavenly secrets, the law of laws and most important story of the world, the word. Being able to spend more time with the Bible can only mean you get in tune with the truth more and more, so when you hear of something that doesn’t sound like the truth, you will know to avoid it. As told by my friend during a Bible class.
There was a man who wanted to learn to carve diamonds and create 25-carat-looking pieces. He came to this old man who was a guru at diamond polishing and carving. The guru’s only task to him was to make him hold a piece of diamond in his hand for a few months.
It was a rather large piece of diamond rock the size of a ping pong ball. All the man had to do was hold it in his palm and never put it down or leave it anywhere. So he bathed with it, slept with it, stared at it…
It was a rather large piece of diamond rock the size of a ping pong ball. All the man had to do was hold it in his palm and never put it down or leave it anywhere. So he bathed with it, slept with it, stared at it…
Two months later, the man went back to the diamond carver and said, “When will you teach me to carve the diamond? I want to learn that but you make me hold the diamond. That doesn’t make any sense.” The guru saw his frustration but simply told him to hold onto it for a few more months, that’s all.
So the man did. But he got even angrier, and went back to the diamond carver after another month. He gave the diamond back to the guru, very upset, “I don’t want to learn any more, you can have the diamond back. It’s not like you’re gonna’ teach me.” The diamond carver took hold of the man’s hand and told him to wait, pressing the diamond into his hand. Then the man got really mad!
“You’re giving me a fake diamond now?” He held the glass diamond in front of the guru, “you’re not making things any better!” Then he threw the fake diamond on the ground. The guru was pleased. The man knew it was not the real one, which not many people can tell apart. Now he could teach him to carve diamonds.
The longer we spend with something or someone, the better we know that object or person, every nook and cranny. We can only right now spend time with the Word so we can tell the truth apart from everything else that is false. You cannot spend time with all other things besides the truth to find the truth. Only when we are familiar with God’s word can we go on to do more things like teach and pray for others...
